Techno-Economic Assessment of IGCC Power Plants Using Gas Switching Technology to Minimize the Energy Penalty of CO2 Capture

Cost-effective CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is critical for the rapid global decarbonization effort recommended by climate science. The increase in levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) plants with CCS primarily associated to large energy penalty involved capture. This study therefore evaluates three high-efficiency concepts based on integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC): (1) gas switching combustion (GSC), (2) GSC added natural firing (GSC-AF) turbine inlet temperature, (3) oxygen production pre-combustion (OPPC) that replaces air separation unit (ASU) more efficient (GSOP) reactors. Relative a supercritical pulverized coal benchmark, these options returned avoidance costs 37.8, 22.4 37.5 €/ton (including transport storage), respectively. Thus, despite higher fuel emissions firing, GSC-AF configuration emerged as most promising solution. advantage maintained even at prices 100 €/ton, after which hydrogen can be used avoid further escalations. case also shows lower sensitivity uncertain economic parameters such discount rate capacity factor, outperforms other clean benchmarks, offers flexibility benefits balancing wind solar power, achieve significant performance gains from use advanced technology.
